Classroom Teachers Opinions on Science-Technology-Society-Environment Learning Domain’s Contribution to Development of Environmental Awareness
Abstract :
The aim of this study was to examine classroom teachers opinions on science-technology-society-environment learning domain’s contribution to the development of environmental awareness among students. The research was based on descriptive qualitative design. The schools and participants in the study were selected through the maximum variation sampling. The data collected in semi-structured interviews from 30 teachers at 10 schools were analyzed descriptively and presented in a concept map format. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: All the teachers found the outcomes to be adequate in terms of developing an environmental awareness. Only the teachers in the schools with higher socio-economic background found the content to be adequate in terms of developing environmental awareness. Teachers prioritize cleanliness and environmental protection activities. Observation techniques were used for the assessment of the environmental awareness outcomes. Measures should be taken to solve the problems such as lack of sufficient equipment, excursion-observation opportunities, and required time in an attempt to raise environmental awareness.
