The Relationships Among Algebraic Expression, Geometric Shape and Geometric Location: Example of Line Segment And Ray
Abstract :
This study aims to determine freshman students’ achievement levels in finding geometric shape and location of a given algebraic expression, and algebraic expression of a given geometric shape and location based on the line segment and half-line. A case study was conductor for fulfilling this aim. The data were gathered with five open-ended questions from 130 freshman students of elementary mathematics teacher training department. The data was descriptively analyzed by being coded as ‘True’, ‘False’ and ‘No Answer’. Findings showed that the participants could not show much achievement in solution sets of algebraic expressions,symbolic representations of solution sets and finding geometric shape and location of solution sets. In spite of these findings, they showed less achievement in naming the sets of given algebraic expression and finding algebraic expressions of given geometric shapes. In addition, the participants gave less right answers to the questions of line segment comparing to half-line.
