Review of Map Reading Self-Efficacy and Success Level of Social Studies Teacher Candidates According to Several Variables
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to determine the differences of map reading self-efficacy and success level of teacher candidates who study in social studies department according to several variables (gender, grade level and the condition of taking GIS course). The research was done by using descriptive survey method. The workgroup of research consists of 420 teacher candidates at grade 3 and 4, studying at Aksaray, Cumhuriyet, Erciyes, Necmettin Erbakan and Nigde (Omer Halisdemir) Universities in 2014-2015 academic year. Five point likert scale composed of 20 items was used to determine map reading self-efficacy of candidates and achievement test was performed to establish map knowledge of candidates. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 program. According to results, while the level of map reading self-efficacy of teacher candidates are not meaningful according to gender, it is meaningful according to grade level and the condition of taking GIS course. Moreover, according to gender variable, significant differences are observed between map reading success level of participants, on the contrary, according to grade level and the condition of taking GIS course, no statistically differences are observed.
