Abstract :

The aim of his study is to determine the factors affecting the program choice and level of consciousness of health vocational school students during career preference and their perspectives on career in field of health services. Research was carried out with the participation of 188 second grade student registered to Dicle University Ataturk Vocational School of Health. Questionnaire included 7 questions about students’ demographics, 5 questions about their level of consciousness and 9 questions about compulsory and individual reasons affecting program choice. Results of the study indicate that majority of students were found to be conscious during program choice. Most of the students choosed the programs independently from their families’ and friends’ preferences. It is also determined that personal reasons regarding career advancement, social prestige of the program, satisfaction of working in the health field is more important for students than compulsory reasons like livelihood or exam scores. When demographics of students were investigated it was seen that most of the students had low income and were members of low educated families. On the other hand when the reasons for program choice was analysed there wasn’t a significant difference between groups due to socio-economic levels. It can be said that the most important reason for program choice is opportunity to help people and prestige of working in health sector.
