Abstract :
The aim of this study was to determine effect of teaching of topic of properties of liquids based on context based approach on students’ achievement. In this study, quasi-experimental design was used. The research sample consists of a total of 53 students in the 9th grade. A two-tier “Properties of Liquids Test” and a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions to determine students opinions of the implementation process were used to collect the data. Covariance analysis was performed on data obtained from testing. It was determined that there was statistically significant mean difference between experiment and control groups in the post-test scores in favour of the experiment group (F(1;50)=4,118; p=0,048). As a result of the analysis of the survey data, it was emerged that the experimental group students found the lessons more comprehensible, interesting and fun and were not bored in lessons. The control group students said that the process was not very different from other courses; sometimes they get bored and became disinterested from the course. The results show that the context based approach has contributed in increasing students’ achievement and interest towards chemistry. Some suggestions have been made based on the results.
