Comparison of Results of CHAID Analysis and Logistic Regression Analysis
Abstract :
The purpose of this study to compare CHAID analysis and logistic regression analysis techniques comparatively. For the analyzes in the study, a data set was used to determine the variables that affect the attitudes of the high school students to the physics lesson. The population of this study consists of the students studying at high schools bound to Ağrı Provincial Directorate of National Education in 2014-2015 educational year and the sample of this study consists of 358 female and 368 male students (726 in total) who were chosen by using appropriate sampling that is one of methods of the nonrandom sampling. As a result of CHAID and logistic regression analysis, conducted by using SPSS 21 packaged software, the independent variables having the highest effect on high school students’ attitudes towards physics were “to use knowledge and skills students gained in their daily life” and “to like physics”. Subsequent to scrutinizing classification performances of CHAID analysis and logistic regression analysis, it was found that logistic regression analysis had better classification rate in a negligible level. However, it appeared that CHAID analysis was more suitable for classification studies compared with logistic regression analysis in terms of giving detailed and understandable results, explaining common effect among independent variables and giving detailed information between dependent and independent variables.
