A STUDY ON THE REASONS FOR DOING MASTER’S DEGREE OF THE INDIVIDUALS

In Turkey, an attention to master degree education has increased since the last two decades with great momentum. On the other hand, despite the intensive attention of the individuals, the ratio of the number of graduation from master degree program in a year to the number of students enrolled was realized at the level of 1/5. This ratio, which represents the overall condition of the programs, also demonstrates some of the problems in master degree education. One of the most important problem is mismatch of the objectives of graduate programs and the reasons for doing master’s degree. In accordance with this problem the reasons for doing master’s degree of the individuals were questioned with developed scale. Analyzing the data obtained, eight dimensions of the reasons for doing master’s degree of the individuals have been identified. In addition, relations between the defined dimensions and the profile data of the individuals were examined also. As a result, the reasons for doing master’s degree of the individuals have been put forward to vary according to the profile data. These results showed that, when developing master degree programs, not only the academic and industrial requirements but also the reasons for doing master’s degree of the individuals should be taken into consideration.
