Abstract :
The aim of this research is to determine the effects of tourism on Antalya and to offer solutions to defeat the negative effects of tourism on Antalya. This research includes the limits of Antalya Metropolitan, Döşemealtı, Kepez, Aksu, Muratpaşa and Konyaaltı Municipalities.Findings: Antalya is one of the cities that was most affected from the tourism boom occurred in 1980s in Turkey. As local, Antalya province receives approximately 9 million foreign tourists (2008). A considerable part of tourists who lodge in the city or places close to the city are related with the city centre owing to transportation. And also this situation is the factor that composes most of the bulk in aspect of transportation. There happened to be boom of population of the city resulted from labors immigration by the effects of tourism boom in 1980s. That is to say; city population rose to 912 568 in 2007, 338 817 in 1985, 164 950 in 1970 while it was 36 324 in 1927. The population in the city centre (approximately 2 million) seriously coerces the urban areas especially in summer months. In the meantime, that coercion that focuses on traffic also manifests the lack of urban areas needed. The immigrants who come to Antalya in order to work in tourism sector accommodate mostly in the north side of the city. As a result, urban functions are insufficient in these areas and a great number of shanty houses are built. Results: There are three affairs of Antalya city. First is the problem of using some districts in urban aspect. In order to tackle that problem, the present urban management has carried out urban transformation projects in some districts like Cumhuriyet Meydanı, Doğu Garajı, Eski Otogar, Kaleiçi, Kale Kapısı, Demirciler and Sobacılar Çarşısı. Second is the traffic problem of the city. Since summer is the season when tourists come affluently to the city, alternative transportation systems must be enhanced to tackle the traffic problem that increases in the season. The ongoing tramway construction in the city must be expedited. Besides, the traffic in main road with east-west directions must be regulated to make it gain alacrity and expedite inner traffic in the city. And the third problem is the lack of urban areas public need. From now on, it is inevitable for the municipalities to enhance the public areas such as parks, shopping centers, green fields, cinemas, and theatres.
