Abstract :
In this study, the functional change occurred across the Alan Plateau was examined in a geographical sense. It was aimed to explore the change in transhumance activities and its effect on the region throughout the history. The change across the plateau which started with Fırka-I İslahiye in 1865 turned into a functional change after 1955 with the process of drying up Lake Amik. Being more evident in the years following 1990 when the improvements in transport-communication and infrastructure facilities took place, this change has reached the present day. Along with the socio-economic and cultural change in about 50-60 years time, the plateau has undergone a change in the sense of its role in local economy, in land use and the type of settlement. Therefore, the plateau today has been going through a change from an economic area with simple houses which is used during particular seasons for stockbreeding into an area for relaxing and recreational activities. A large number problems regarding the settlement and environment emerged across the plateau of which function and role in the socio-economic life of the region has changed. If the unplanned and uncontrolled growth keeps going at the current rate, the plateau will probably lose its nature of being summer resort in the long term. Sustainability of the activities will depend on the measures to be taken.
