Abstract :
Our university is celebrating its 55th establishment anniversary by the year 2012. The university has succeeded into becoming one of the biggest universities in Turkey in all its parts since its establishment until today. All modern sciences have been represented in the university and many big developments have been made. No doubt about that, one of these significant developments is the discipline of geography; although many geography academicians were sent to young universities, there are many important and successful academicians in the university who have prepared and are still preparing original pieces.Geographical researches and education have been carried out in two academic units of Atatürk University. These are the Faculty of Literature, Department of Geography and Kâzım Karabekir Faculty of Education, Department of Geography teaching. Developments and education in these units were analyzed in our study.It is important to remind that the discipline of geography is rather developed in Atatürk University; there are approximately 800 students in geography department; 27 geography academic members have been working; 34 professional geographers have moved to different universities, and more than 600 geographic pieces have been prepared… Surely, honor of this brilliant success primarily belongs to the founder of the department and my doctorate teacher Prof.Dr.Mehmet Tevfik TARKAN (1923-1984). This is why each geographer of Atatürk University owes him the duty of loyalty.
