Otter boards’ performances and design criteria

Otter boards are one of the major components for effective use of trawl. They provide horizontally opening by using the hydrodynamic resistance and significantly affect fishing effort. Fuel cost is very high in trawling when compare to other fishing techniques. Scientific studies on otter board have accelerated especially during the 1970s oil crisis and still continuous intensively. In addition to, traditional otter board, which is wooden and simple rectangular, there are different material and design otter boards are used commonly in trawl fisheries. In this study, we are focused on, types of otter board, the basic principles of the dynamics of trawl doors, hydrodynamic forces effecting otter board, relationship between otter board and engine power, and their usage and performances.
