Assessment of heavy metal pollution of surface sediments from lagoon areas of Gediz Delta (Izmir Bay)
Abstract :
In this study, the heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments from Kırdeniz, Homa, Çilazmak Lagoons and Çamaltı Saltpan at Gediz Delta were investigated. The possible sources of metal pollution were determined according to the enrichment factors (EF) and sediment quality and pollution degrees were also defined with sediment quality guideline (SQG). The highest heavy metal concentrations were determined at Kırdeniz, Çilazmak Lagoons and Çamaltı Saltpan. The pollutions of Pb, Cr and Ni at all sampling area and especially Hg pollution at Çilazmak Lagoon and Çamaltı Saltpan are originated from anthropogenic sources. The concentrations of Ni were below the PEL value and the levels of Pb, Cr were above the TEL value in all sampling area. According to SOQ, all sampling stations were classified as heavily polluted for Ni and Cr and moderately polluted for Pb. The highest contamination degrees were detected in Kırdeniz and Çilazmak Lagoons.
