Abstract :
In our study, effects of calcium and zeolite on the accumulation of cadmium in fish tissues (kidney, liver, gill and muscle) of Oreochromis niloticus was investigated. The fish was exposed to 1.0 mg/L Cd, 1.0 mg/L Cd+1.0 mg/L Ca (Cd+Ca),, 1.0 mg/L Cd+1.0 g/L Zeolite (Cd+ZE) mixtures for 5, 10 and 15 days, and cadmium accumulation in tissues were measured by ICP-MS spectrophotometry. Cadmium accumulation also increased with increasing periods of exposure tissues studied. Highest accumulation of cadmium occured in the kidney followed by liver, gill and muscle. In all exposure periods, accumulation of cadmium in whole tissues of O. niloticus decreased statistically significant in the presence of calcium and zeolite. The result of our study demostrated that the accumulation of cadmium was decreased by calcium and zeolite, and that this decreasing effect of zeolite is more impotrant than that of calcium.
