Title Of Article :
Legal examination of the patients admitted to the Emergency Service of Ege University Hospital due to traffic accidents in 2011
Abstract :
Aim: In this study, patients who were admitted to the Ege University (EU) Emergency Service were evaluated retrospectively. It was aimed at obtaining the demographic data of patients who had traffic accidents, their usage frequency of protective measures (infant car seat, seat belt, helmet, etc.) types of injuries received, quality of medical intervention given and an overall legal examination of injuries.Materials and Methods: Patients who were admitted to the EU Emergency Service between 01.012011-31.12.2011 due to traffic accidents were analyzed with SPSS statistical programme. Results: Most of the subjects consisted of individuals over 18 years and were male. The percentage of accidents inside the vehicle was 48.6%. Data on protective measures could not be obtained in 80.6% of the motorbike and bike accidents. Legally, the patients who could be treated with non-dangerous simple medical intervention (SMI) were 63.5%. The patients who could not be treated with SMI were 18.7%.Conclusion: The number of cases that could not be evaluated in the emergency care unit was low, however, this did not occur due to insufficient recording by the attending physician. This happened mostly because of the difficulty seen in the interpretation of the data in the emergency unit. Emergency physicians have several responsibilities such as making medical interventions in accordance with the rules. For a physician to protect himself/herself and not cause any legal victimization, it is paramount that he/she must keep the medical recording neatly and properly, in particular, the final reports should be written properly with extreme caution.
