Abstract :
Physical activity is defined as any body movement produced by skeletal muscles and joints that requires energy expenditure. It increases heart and breathing rate and results in fatigue. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer and decreases the mortality rate of these diseases. Although regular and adequate levels of physical activity is essential almost in every stage of life, recently the importance of physical activity in the elderly population is announced even more louder than ever to create their sense of belonging to “active” population and to minimize old-age dependency ratio, morbidity or other problems associated with sedentary lifestyle. In this review, the definion and benefits of physical activity and its effects on systemic diseases in geriatric population are presented with up to date literature
