NORTHERN REGIONALISM IN ITALY AND THE NORTHERN LEAGUE

Regionalist movements in Western Europe differ among each other in terms of historical, geographical and socio-economical circumstances of the country in which they develop. Among these movements, the Northern League (Lega Nord), which has played an active role in Italian politics during the last couple of decades, draws particular attention with its controversial discourses, ideological ambiguities and paradoxical aspects of its political course. Departing from a brief historical background, the present study aims to account for ideological, discursive and political features of the Movement. Thus it is expected to shed light on the roots and socio-economic background of northern regionalism in Italy.
