Abstract :
The ancient city of Knidos located at the westernmost end of the mountainous Datça Peninsula, is today within the boundaries of the Datça District of Muğla Province. The ancient city with its two ports was located within the region of Caria in antiquity and was, due to its location, an important port of call on the ancient sea routes around Anatolia. Consequently, the ports of the city of Knidos where there was mercantile commerce dating from the Archaic and Classical Ages, served as a gateway port to the outside world. It is evident the city experienced intense maritime traffic due to its ports. Within this historical context, underwater research in 2014 was undertaken in the Knidos port area and its surroundings. The aims of this study were to determine the current situation of, and to research in detail, the ruins found within the port of Knidos and around it in previous years; and to undertake investigations to determine if there were any other cultural assets in the city’s ports and around it, employing off-field methods. In addition, it was intended to make a contribution in elucidating the relationships of the city and its history in terms of maritime commerce, by determining the underwater cultural assets of the city, these in addition to those determined through land excavation. In this study, forming the subject to this article there are finds of: 1 tile wreck, 4 amphora wrecks, 1 architectural block wreck, 2 iron anchors, many amphorae of various forms over the breakwaters of the port, 1 brazier that is understood to have been produced of a type suitable for use on-board ship, and a variety of architectural elements.
