Abstract :
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency of depression and anxiety symptoms and the relation of these symptoms with some of patients characteristics and patients perceptions about nurses. Methods: The study has planned as cross-sectional one. The sample consisted of 480 patients who were hospitalized in a teaching hospital in Ankara and who were eligible for study. A questionnaire related to socio-demographics and perceptions about nurses of inpatients, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used for data collection. 432 (%90) questionnaires which were filled correctly, were evaluated in data analysis. Results: Of the inpatients 51.4% have had depression symptoms and 24.5% of them showed anxiety symptoms. Education level, reason for hospitalization and length of hospitalization and the ward type were the variables associated with both anxiety and depression symptoms. Age and marital status associated with depression and gender were associated with anxiety (p 0.05). Additionally, the study has shown that satisfaction statements of patients might be related to anxiety and depression scores. Conclusions: The patients who had longer hospitalization and who will have a surgical operation should also be observed for anxiety and depression carefully. Monitoring psychiatric symptoms is important for the compliance and the course of treatment. For future studies, longitudinal studies were suggested to reveal the personal characteristics related to psychiatric symptoms.
