Abstract :
In childhood, the liver may be affected by medications, herbal preparations, diseases and many other events. The effects are mostly in the form of raised simple liver function test levels, but may sometimes may progress to acute liver failure, cirrhosis and even to liver cancer. Liver damage associated with medications and herbal products occurs through intrinsic and idiosyncratic mechanisms. As a result of hepatotoxic damage, hepatocellular damage, cholestasis or both of these together in a mixed form may clinically occur. The hepatotoxic potential of the substance used, interaction with other medications, genetic and environmental factors define the damage which will occur in the liver. Previous studies on hepatotoxicity have been more about medications and there are very few studies on the subject of herbal products and other substances. In this paper, an evaluation was made through a literature review on the subject of hepatotoxicity which developed due to medications and herbal products in childhood, which is an extensive subject often encountered in daily practice but about which little is known.
