Abstract :
In this paper, the effects of the number of inserts, cutting speed and feed rate on surface roughness in milling of AISI D3 cold work steel on a vertical CNC machining centre have been presented using coated carbide tools. Experimental study were carried out by using cutting speed 80 m/min, 120 m/min and 180 m/min and feed rate 0,08 mm/tooth, 0,12 mm/tooth ve 0,18 mm/tooth. On the other hand, the number of inserts was changed such as 1, 2, 3 and 6 on the face cutter. As a result of tests, decreasing of tool life has been determined when cutter insert number and feedrate increased but it has been seen that cheek wear is dominant on cutter tool wear. The surface roughness (Ra) increased when the number of inserts and feed rate increased. But, the effect of cutting speed on values of Ra was not seen. The most significant parameters on surface roughness are respective the number of inserts, the feed rate and finally the cutting speed.
