Abstract :
In this paper, the wind energy potential in Menemen is statistically analyzed based on wind speed data which measured hourly in 2008 – 2009. Besides the wind turbine parameters, wind speed distribution is one of the most important parameters for wind power utilization at one site. It is used the Weibull and Rayleigh distributions to determine wind energy potential of the region. The conclusion of this preliminary research suggests that wind energy in the campus is statistically convenient for electricity generation. Measured hourly time series of wind speed data were obtained from the State Meteorological Station in Menemen over a two year period from 2008 to 2009. Finally, these observations are compared with the theoretical data, which are obtained from the Weibull and Rayleigh distributions, by means of statistical hypothesis testing. The wind speed distributions are represented by Weibull distribution and also by Rayleigh distribution. Based on the experimental data, it was found that the numerical values of k range from 1,838 to 1,869 while those of c are in the range of 5,629-5,898. As a result, the Weibull model provide better power density estimation than Rayleigh model for the station.
