Fabrication and Characterization of Hot Extruded Hybrid Composites Al 2024 Matrix Reinforced With B4C/Al2O3
Abstract :
In this study, 2024 alloy powder (Al-Cu-Mg), commonly used for aerospace industry, reinforced with B4C and Al2O3 particles (5- 10-15% wt.) were used to produce hybrid/composite. Matrix powder and reinforcement components were mixed in a three dimensional mixer for 45 minutes and then compacted under uniaxial press (400 MPa) in order to produce powder blocks. These blocks were sintered at 600˚C and then extruded at 500˚C. Then samples were cut with wire erosion method to ensure the appropriate standard dimension for transverse rupture strength (TRS) tests. The increase was observed in the density of extruded parts in comparing with the sintered samples. Furthermore, rising in hardness and transverse rupture strength values were determined depending on the increase in the amount of the reinforcing components. In the study, maximum transverse rupture strength of 920MPa and hardness of 115HB were reached with at %10 B4C and %15 B4C reinforced samples respectively.
