Abstract :
West has always been interested in the East civilizations since the prehistoric periods. With the effects of social, political, economical and scientific progress in 17. and 18. Centuries, West’s interest in question started to be named as ‘ Orientalism’. According to this, East and West were evaluated as part of oppositions and differences and some images related to them were produced through products such as novels, travel books, cinema, advertisement and trailers. While ‘West’ is represented with Its ‘positive’ sides in the products in question, ‘East’ is undertaken with It’s ‘negative’ properties. From this point, as part of Edward Said’s orientalism thought, in this study it is aimed to determine the images of ‘ The East’ and ‘The West’, which are formed through the travel book that can be qualified as an important mean of communication in 18. and 19. Centuries when the mass media was newly developing and became widespread. In this aim in the study, Bernard Braeilles’ travel book called “İstanbul”s European and Levantine Neighbourhoods” was examined. First, the indicators of orientalism were determined. Then, the representations of the indicators and their nature were studied. As a result of the analysis it was found that most of the indicators of orientalism exist in the book. According to this, the images of ‘The East’ and ‘Easterner’ are like ‘ barbarian’, ‘despotic’, ‘dangerous’, ‘underdeveloped’, ‘idle’, ‘filthy’ whereas ‘The West’ and ‘The Westerner’ images are designed as ‘civilized’, ‘advanced’, ‘pacifist’, ‘fair’, ‘benevolent’.
