Title Of Article :
A Comparison of Grammatical and Semantic Processing in the Second Language of Turkish-English Bilinguals
Abstract :
This study investigates grammatical and semantic processing in the late-learned language of bilinguals. 31 Turkish-English bilinguals participated in the study. Out of 40 sentences used in the experiment, half were grammatically and semantically correct while the other half were anomalous. The participants listened to the sentences and were asked to decide whether they were grammatically and semantically correct or incorrect. The response times and the accuracy of their answers were recorded and statistically analyzed. The results showed that the participants responded more correctly to the semantically anomalous sentences than to the grammatically anomalous sentences whereas there were no statistically significant difference between the response times of the grammatical and semantic processing of sentences. This result shows that there were significant differences between the grammatical and semantic processing of the late-learned language of the bilinguals.
