Plant, Ear and Yield Characteristics of some Sweet Corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt) Varieties

This research was carried out to determine plant, ear and yield characteristics of some sweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharata Sturt ) varieties. The experiments were conducted during 2009 and 2010 at the Research Field of Agricultural Faculty, Eskisehir Osmangazi University. Seven sweet corn genotypes (Lumina, Merit, Sunshine, Jubile, Challenger, Yellow Baby cultivars and 2201 line) were used as materials. The experiments were designed as a randomized complete block design with four replications. Statistical differences were found among tested varieties for all traits. According to two years average values; plant height varied from 195 (Challenger) to 230 cm (Merit), number of leaves per plant from 7,9 (Yellow Baby) to 11,1 (Merit), ear length from 21,9 (Merit) to 23,8 cm (Lumina), ear diameter from 48,0 (2201) to 54,1 mm (Sunshine). Ear weight (de-husked) was found between 338 (Jubile) and 406 g (Lumina), ear yield with de-husked varied from 1934 (Jubile) to 2325 kg/da (Sunshine). Firstly, Sunshine and Lumina varieties, secondly, Merit variety which have high plant, ear and yield characteristics were determined as advising cultivars.
