Abstract :
Problematic clay soils having dispersibility and swell characteristics have caused major problems in many engineering structures. Different additives are used in controlling the swelling potential and dispersibility property as well as improving some of the properties of the soils. In this study, the effect of magnesium chloride solution on the characteristic of dispersibility and swelling potential of clay soils were investigated. For this purpose, identification and compaction tests were carried out on the three different soil samples obtained from Afyon province as a priority. Swell percentage tests for the determination of swelling potential, and also pinhole test, crumb test, double hydrometer test and chemical test in the evaluation of dispersibility properties were performed on these samples. These samples with swelling potential and dispersive characteristics are intended to be improved with magnesium chloride solution. Swell and dispersibility tests are performed on the specimens prepared by standard Proctor energy and with different levels of magnesium chloride admixtures (% 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10) to evaluate the effect of additive. As a result of this study, it is shown that the stabilization of problematic clay soils can sufficiently be provided using the magnesium chloride solution and the significant effect of the admixtures is possible after the addition of 7 percent the magnesium chloride solution
