Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between primary school principals’ power styles and teacher organizational commitment. The study sample included 310 randomly selected teachers from 20 primary schools in Ankara. The Organizational Commitment Scale and the Power Styles Scale were used to gather data. Multiple linear regression analyses indicated that personality and reward power styles of school principals were negatively related to compliance commitment. Coercive power style was found to be positively associated with compliance. The power styles of personality and reward positively and significantly predicted the identification commitment. Personality, reward, and legitimate power styles were positive and significant predictors of internalization commitment. However, coercive power negatively and significantly predicted the internalization commitment. Results demonstrated that principals’ expert and referent power styles associated with personality were more significantly related to teachers’ organizational commitment as compared to other power styles.
