The Effect on Retention of Applied Scenarios in the Problem-Based Learning Method
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to examine adaptability and retention of Problem-Based Learning method at third class “Statistics and Probability-I” lesson in elementary mathematics education. The study was carried in the first semester of the 2009-2010 academic year, third class students in Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Education Faculty of Elementary Mathematics Education were carried out. In this study, 50 students in the experimental group were given lessons with the application scenario. The 49 students in the control group were presented with traditional methods. At the Problem-Based Learning process, the scenario prepared which deals with “Permutation- Combination” subject was applied. At the end of the education given with scenario, “Statistics and Probability-I Quiz” questions was applied to both of the groups. The same exam was repeated approximately three months later. At the end of the study, the education given using the scenario emerged as positively affecting to retention.
