مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - Are Nasal Tampons Necessary in Rhinoplasty Operations?

Abstract :

Objective: Rhinoplasty is one of the most complicated and most commonly performed operations by plastic surgeons.Even though it is a common procedure, postoperative care is still debated. One of debated topics is whether intranasal tampons should be used or not. In this study, we aimed to analyze and share the data of 48 patients who underwent rhinoplasty without the use of intranasal tampons.Material and Method: Forty-eight patients who had rhinoplasty without septal surgery for cosmetic reasons at our hospital between November 2011 and April 2013 were evaluated in terms of postoperative edema, epistaxis, displacement of bony-cartilage structures, synechia, septal hematoma and septal perforation.Results: The age of the patients ranged between 18-55. Of the patients, 33 (69%) were female and 15 (31%) were male. No patients developed nasal bone or cartilage displacement in early postoperative period, 3 patients developed excessive periorbital edema and ecchymosis (racoon eye), one patient developed epistaxis and required an anterior nasal tampon, one patient developed nasal synechia. Septal hematoma and septal perforation were not encountered in any patients Conclusion: Intranasal tampons are unnecessary
