  • Abstract
Objective: Arterial stifness is a highly prevalent predisposing factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. The objective of the present study is to determine the effect of mean platelet volum (MPV) on arterial stiffness (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity) in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients. Material and Method: We enrolled 105 newly diagnosed hypertensive patients (mean age 44±8 years, 38 male) who admitted to our nephrology center. Arterial stiffness was measured by carotid femoral pulse wave velocity, using the automatic device Complior Colson® recording unit. We have recorded all laboratuary parameters and demographic features. Results: Age, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, MPV, uric acid, total cholesterol, homocystein was positively correlated with carotid femoral pulse wave velocity. In logistic regression model, LDL-cholesterol, homocystein, MPV and age were predictor of carotid femoral pulse wave velocity. Conclusion: MPV is a readily practical and reproducible parameter that should be available in all routine blood counts. Increased MPV has been found to be a predictor of arterial stiffness in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.
