The Effect of Depression on Life Satisfaction and Health Related Quality of Life in The Elderly Men and Women
Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of depression on life satisfaction and health related quality of life in the elderly men and women.Materials and Methods: The study included 52 women, 95 men total 147 persons aged 65 years and older. The demographic information including age, height and weight, the individuals marital status, educational state, social security, chronic diseases and their usage of asisstive devices were taken. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS) were used to evaluate depression level, health related quality of life and life satsifaction, respectively.Results: The highest depression rates were found on women, the highest health satisfaction and health related quality of life rates were found on men. There was found positively difference between men and women acoording to health relaed quality of life and depression (p 0.05), no difference was found about life satisfaction (p 0.05). In both men and women were found positively a relation between depression and NHP energy levels, pain, emotional reaction, sleep, social isolation and the total NHP (p 0.05).Conclusion: Depression being an important factor in quality of life and life satisfaction, prosecuting is essential in order to increase the health related quality of life in the elderly individiuals physical, physiological and emotional well-being.
