Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographical findings of acrylic external fixator and intramedullary pin applications for the treatment of long bone fractures in extremities of dogs, and cats, and to assess treatment results and complications encountered. This study was carried out in 28 dogs and 17 cats in different breed, age and gender referred to Firat University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Department of Surgery. Acrylic external fixator technique was applied to four patients suffering from femural fracture (n= 4 dogs), eight patients with tibial fracture (n= 5 dogs and n= 3 cats), two patients with humeral fracture (n= 2 cats) and four patients suffering from radius-ulnar fracture (n= 2 dogs and n= 2 cats). Intramedullary pin technique was applied to ten patients suffering from femural fracture (n= 6 dogs and n= 4 cats), five patients with tibial fracture (n= 3 dogs and n= 2 cats), six patients with humeral fracture (n= 4 dogs and n= 2 cats) and six patients suffering from radius-ulnar fracture (n= 4 dogs and n= 2 cats). Postoperative clinical and radiographical examinations for each patient were carried out for at least 35 days and then treatment results were compared. As a result, it was concluded that acrylic external fixator and intramedullary pin applications might be used widely in clinical practice because of economical considerations and easy access for the treatment of long bone fractures.
