Assessment of consumer s attitudes and knowledge levels towards genetically modified foods
Abstract :
A total of 440 people (207 women, 233 men) in different age groups, having different education levels and with different occupations were involved in this study about genetically modified organisms (GMO).The aim of study was to evaluate the knowledge levels of consumers about GMO and their attitudes towards GMO products. Consumers were asked to answer twenty three questions. The questions were about the awarness of consumers on GMO, the effects of these products to health and environment, and the state of official legislations in our country. The study showed that the consumers do not have enough relevant knowledge about GMO products. It was observed that the knowledge of consumers increased as their education levels increased. But, in general the consumers displayed negative attitudes towards GMO products.
