Abstract :
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of frozen bull sperm thawed in a water bath and dry thawing system within certain time at a certain temperature on spermological parameters. Ten straws (0.25 ml) containing of the frozen bull sperm belonging to same bull, frozen at the same date and stored under same conditions were used in the study. Straws were thawed at 37.5 ºC for 25 sec in a water bath and dry thawing system. Sperm samples were obtained from the each thawed sperm and evaluated for spermatological parameters. There was no difference in the percentage of motility, dead/live spermatozoa rate, hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST) values, abnormal spermatozoa rates (head, middle, tail parts of spermatozoa and total abnormal spermatozoa) in the study. Although acrosomal disorders of spermatozoa thawed in dry thawing system (1.5%±0.30) were significantly higher (P 0.05) than those of thawing in warm water thawing system (0.5%±0.16), acrosomal disorders of the spermatozoa were acceptable. In conclusion, the dry thawing system can have some advantages due to the fact that dry thawing system device can sustain its heat longer time (~10 min), there is no risk of mixing sperm with water, lack of difficulty in adjusting the water temperature in the barn conditions or keeping the certain water temperature in cold weather conditions.
