Abstract
Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a contagious viral disease of equids caused by equine arteritis virus (EAV), a virus classified in the family Arteriviridae. EAV is present in the horse population of many countries world-wide. The objective of this study was to investigate the serological presence of EVA infection in horses using as working animal in rural areas of Van province. For this purpose, blood samples collected from 124 pack horses were tested against specific antibodies to EAV using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In conclusion, 14 serum samples (11.3%) were found to be seropositive. Pack horses are not accepted as an economically significant, however, should not be disregarded that neglected epidemics possess significant risk potential for pure bred horse breeding enterprises.
