Abstract :
Background : Burnout is “a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal fulfillment in individuals engaged professionally with others”. Few studies have evaluated medical students’ burnout worldwide. Objectives : To prove that burnout exists upstream during medical studies, evaluating its degrees and associated factors. Methods : A cross-sectional epidemiological study enrolling 180 medical students was conducted in one university in Lebanon, between March-April 2016, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results : 68.1% of students had moderate to high emotional exhaustion, 50% of students had high depersonalization and 71.1% of students had weak professional achievement. Men were depersonalized and more depleted than women. Older students were more exhausted, with the highest exhaustion and depersonalization rates occurring among students in 4th and 7th years. The presence of a doctor in the family was correlated to a higher professional achievement. Conclusion : Compared to other populations, our levels of exhaustion, depersonalization are higher and personal achievement is too low among Lebanese students.
