Abstract :
If the most important goal of education is to bring forth individuals of questioning and generating knowledge who not only have learned the ways of attaining knowledge, but also have critical thinking and the ability to analyze, synthesize and use what they learn as individuals with their social and private lives, It is possible to achieve this only by using the new learning approaches that get learners to the center in the learning process. One of these new approaches is Elaboration Theory of Instruction. The aim of the research is to examine the effect of elaboration theory of Instruction on the academic success of students in math class. The study was conducted within the framework of the actual experimental design with pretest-posttest control group. The study group consists of 23 experimental and 26 control group seventh grader students that are totally 49.Achievement test was used to collect research data. Independent t- test was used to analyze the data. According to the findings of the study, the experimental group to whom elaboration theory of Instruction was applied was more successful in math class than control group students. This result is interpreted in the way that elaboration theory of Instruction is an important factor in the development of student academic achievement.
