Abstract :
This study was conducted to evaluate ninth grade geography lessons’ extracurricular activities in terms of teachers’ opinions. The research is designed as descriptive mixed model in which quantitative and qualitative research methods is used. While the quantitative data was obtained from the questionnaire study to 155 geography teachers working in secondary schools within the boundaries of Ankara Metropolitan Government in 2010-2011 academic year, qualitative data was obtained by semi-structured interview forms which were done with 10 selected teachers who were chosen according to the maximum variation sampling method. Teachers’ length of service, course load and class population study variables were taken into consideration. According to the results obtained from analysis of data; 9 of teachers were found not to implement the proposed activities although they find them necessary and appropriate to use in geography lessons. As a result, it was found that the application of extra-curricular activities was not significantly different according to seniority of the teacher. However, according to the variables such as class size, teaching load and class population, it was found significantly different in favor of teachers.
