Abstract :
Developing writing skills is more difficult than other skills; therefore it is difficult to gain the writing habit. The fact that many thoughts become clear and visible through writing differentiates the writing skill from others. It is clear in several studies that students who are qualified in writing skills are found to be successful in terms of academic achievement as well (Temur, 2001). Therefore, it is very important in terms of academic achievement that students should acquire the writing habits. In this study, the aim is to specify how secondary school level learners gained writing skills and determine the writing reasons. The participants are 34 secondary school students who gained writing habits in the city center of Bursa. In the study, open-ended survey and semi- structured interviews were used as data collection tools and the data were analyzed by using content analysis method. The data showed that students’ one of the main writing reasons stems from their teachers’ encouragement. In the study, it is revealed that students psychological reasons include the encouragement by family, character features, personal interests, reading habits, competitions, and published articles have an effect on gaining students writing habits. It is observed that teachers’ feedback, motivating students verbally, allowing time for writing regularly are welcomed by the learners and using different methods have an effect on gaining writing habits.
