Teachers’ Elimination of the Difficulties Derived from Mathematics in Science and Technology Classes and the Importance of the Integration of Science and Mathematics
Abstract :
In this study it was aimed to reveal the difficulties derived from mathematical concepts or words faced by science and technology teachers, to identify the solutions that they use in order to eliminate those difficulties and how it is important to integrate science and mathematics. Case study method based on qualitative approach was used in the study. Semi-structured interview as data collection tool was used in the study that was conducted with 6 science and technology teachers working in different parts of Turkey (5 different regions) in 2012-2013 academic year. The data that were transformed into texts at the end of the interview process were analyzed through content analysis. As a result of the data analysis, 4 themes were identified. It was revealed that teachers faced conceptual and operational difficulties regarding mathematics in classes. It was indicated that science and mathematics teachers spend individual efforts and collaborate with other teachers in order to resolve the difficulties. Interpretations and suggestions were made through the evaluations on the themes.
