Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to determine the teachers’ and parents’ attitudes towards home visits in early childhood education. The study has been conducted on a group composed of thirty-two teachers from Konya, Ankara, Mersin, and Manisa provinces who work in private or public preschools and thirty-two parents of the children who attend these schools. Participants’ opinions were collected by using structured questionnaires. During the analysis phase, qualitative research methods have been used, teachers and parents responses were examined by content analysis. Results of this study revealed that parents and teachers have similar opinions about home visits. Teachers indicated that they are planning home visits primarily to obtain detailed information about the child and family, and then to strengthen school-parent communication. Parents expectations from home visits are primarily exchanging of information about the children and teacher evaluations by observing children in their home environment. Teachers and parents stated that home visits give opportunities to know each other, develop school-family collaboration, enhance intimacy and relation between teacher-parent and child, and during the home visits teachers and parents were comfortable while expressing themselves. Both teachers and parents stated that home visits are efficient and the visiting atmosphere is warm and positive.
