Abstract :
The purpose of this work is to study the effects of a cognitive development program that is composed of 12 sessions and 45 activities on the development of attention, perception and memory of 5-6 years old children. The study group for this work is composed of 24 children attending a pre-school program in Ankara, Turkey. The experimental study designed using pre-test, post-test has test and control groups. 12 of the children are included to the test group and the remaining 12 children form the control group. The study data is collected by the researchers using general information forms as well as cognitive development assesment forms used to assess the use of attention, perception and memory. Cognitive development assessment form is composed of 19 items that are carefully selected to cover the sub-components of attention, perception and memory such as short-term and long-term memory. For the analysis of the results, Wilcoxen signed rank test is used for comparisons in the same group and Mann-Whitney U test is used for comparisons among groups. The results show that cognitive development education program improved the attention, perception and memory development of the 12 children in the test group compared to the control group.
