Cloud Computing: Opportunities and Challenges for Businesses

Cloud computing represents a new approach for supplying and using information technology services. Considering its benefits for firms and the potential of changes that it may lead to, it is envisioned that cloud computing can be the most important innovation in information technology since the development of the internet. In this study, firstly, the development of cloud computing and related technologies are explained and classified by giving current application examples. Then the benefits of this new computing model for businesses are elaborated especially in terms of cost, flexibility and service quality. In spite of its benefits, cloud computing also poses some risks for firms, of which security is one of the most important, and there are some challenges in its implementation. This study points out the risks that companies should be wary about and some legal challenges related to cloud computing. Lastly, approaches that companies may take against cloud computing and different strategies that they may adopt are discussed and some recommendations are made.
