Economic Activities of Maraş during the Ottoman Period: At the End of 19th Century and at the Begining of 20th Century
Abstract :
This study includes end of the nineteenth century and the begining of twentieth century. In this study, we have tried to put forward at the economic activities of Marash. For this, we have used Ottoman archival documents and Aleppo Province Salnames. Marash, geographical location and because of arable land throughout history has been home to many civilizations. For this reason, Marash became an important commercial and manufacturing center in the past. Aleppo and Marash have been major textile manufacturing center of the country during the Ottoman period. At the end of nineteenth century, traditional industrial products were exported to Europe and away from markets. Marash textile sector has been an increase in the number of businesses in line with the growing population. At the begining of the twentieth century, economic vitality increased in the city. Agriculture and animal husbandry in the region advanced. Accordingly, the agro-based industries have developed.
