CAPABILITY OF OLD TURKISH IN FULFILLING NEW CONCEPTS: THE EQUIVALENTS OF THE TERM ASHAB IN EARLY TURKISH QURAN TRANSLATIONS
Abstract :
It has been stated that loanwords are gained chiefly between languages, that has the same religious or literary backgrounds. When Turks entered into Islam in masses since 10th century, they have established a linguistic relationship with Arabic, the main language of Islam. In this study, Arabic ashab concept will be studied in different historical periods of Quran translations to Turkish. The study will focus on revealing the words or phrases that are employed instead of the concept.Firstly, this article will provide brief explanation about one of the most common notions in Qur an; ashab. Later by examining the paraphrases of the concept in early Qur an translations; the sufficinecy of Turkish phrases in substituting the concept will be analyzed. The article exerpts the contemporary texts comprising the ashab concept. It will be concluded that the older texts make use of Turkish terminology more with the prupose of ease of understanding and ease of disemmination of religious teaching.
