مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - THE PAST THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE OF ANKARA GOAT(CAPRA HİRCUS ANCRYRENSİS) BREEDING IN TURKEY

Abstract :

Ankara and its neighbourhood, which have been identified with Anatolia and which are the first things that come to mind when we mention Angora goat (Mohair) breeding, have lost their significance as an Angora goat breeding region recently. Although Turkey has the optimum geographical conditions for Angora goat breeding, it has disappeared from agricultural life to a certain extent in many provinces and it completely disappeared in some provinces. The reason for this disappearance is the wrong government policy. Anatolia has hosted a lot of civilisations and has been populated for thousands of years and there is a rooted goat breeding culture. Although there are regions with similar conditions to the ones in Central Anatolia, the mohair obtained there seems to have much lower quality compared to angora in Turkey. Ankara goat has been represented as an enemy of the forests. As a result of wrong government policies, its breeding has come to an extinction point. Within that context, the condition of Angora goat breeding in Turkey from past to present is discussed in this study
