Abstract :
Makbul İbrahim Pasha had a significiant role amongst Ottoman Grand Viziers due to his character and actions; he occupied the position of Grand Vizier during the reign of Kanuni Sultan Suleiman, an epoch known as a “golden age”. Although Ibrahim Pasha was an effective functionary in the Ottoman State’s destiny between 1523 and 1526, some historical matters in his life and his actions remain obscure and these present a deficiency in terms of Ottoman history. The information on his childhood and adolescence which only comprised rumours seems to obstruct the writing of a biography of Ibrahim Pasha. However, the process which starts with the Grand Viziership of Ibrahim Pasha can be followed in a profitable manner. The detailed information on Ibrahim Pasha exists within the works of the contemporary historians of the period. The first activity of the Pasha appointed to the Grand Viziership was to establish order in Egypt where unrest was aroused after the riot of Ahmet Pasha who was appointed as the Governor. The activities of Ibrahim Pasha in the region provided significant benefits both to the Ottoman State and to Egypt. In this study, Ibrahim Paşa’s Grand Viziership, his impact upon Egypt and upon the routes to and from Egypt and his activities following his return to İstanbul are evaluated within an original approach.
