Title Of Article :
Applying Antoine Berman’s Translation Criticism Model to the Turkish Translation of “A Turkish Woman’s European Impressions”
Abstract :
In this article the Turkish translation of Zeynep Hanoum’s book entitled “A Turkish Woman’s European Impressions” is examined with an analytical map proposed as a translation criticism model by Antoine Berman. The aim is understanding the translator’s decisions, the most vital agent in producing a target text in the related language and culture, on an objective basis within a critical perspective. The article is in four parts. The first part presents Berman’s analytical map as a translation criticism model. The second part provides back-ground knowledge concerning the target and source texts. The article concludes with a general evaluation. From the results of this analysis it was concluded that the translator was successful in the language and style she used for the target text, while ethical issues, several textual inconsistencies, semantic defects and grammatical errors were unsuccessful points, indicating the translation is imprecise. It is proposed that the target text may be revised.
