Investigation of Mupirocin and Fusidic Acid Resistance on Staphylococcus aureus Strains Isolated from Atopic Dermatitis Patients

Atopic dermatitis, is primarily an inflammatory skin disease of children with chronic relapsing pruritic dermatitis. Mupirocin and fusidic acid, are used in atopic dermatitis in order to reduce the Staphylococcus aureus colonization and to control the flares of the disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate the presence of mupirocin and fusidic acid resistant S.aureus in patients with the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis. Fifty-five patients (24 boys, 31 girls between the ages 11 and 18) with the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis formed the study group. The swabs were taken from left antecubital fossa, anterior nares and from skin lesions. Samples were cultured on mannitolsalt agar and sheep blood-triptone soy agar containing sub-MIC concentrations of mupirosin and fucidic acid at 37°C for 48 hours aerobically. The mupirocin and fusidic acid resistance of the S.aureus strains was detected by buyyon dilution method. Of the 55 patients enrolled in this study 9 (16.4%) had skin lesions. Eighteen S.aureus strains (7 from the antecubital fossa, 11 from the nares) were isolated. Mupirocin and fusidic acid resistance of the S.aureus strains was detected as 17.6% and 5.9%, respectively. This rate was 5.5% and 1.8% in atopic dermatitis patients, respectively. Antibiotic resistant S.aureus strains may be present or may arise in patients with atopic dermatitis either in the treatment or follow-up period.
