  • Abstract
Aim: Candida species can be isolated from clinical samples as a colonization or an infection factor. In this study our aim was to investigate the production of slime factor among Candida species which were yielded from various clinical samples as a virulence factor. Materials and methods: A total of 172 Candida species [137 (79.6%) C.albicans, 14 (8.1%) C.parapsilosis, 8 (4.6%) C.tropicalis, 6 (3.4%) C.kefyr, 3 (1.7%) C.glabrata, 2 (1.1%) C.krusei, 1 (0.5%) C.dubliniensis, 1 (0.5%) C.famata] were studied. Results: By using modifi ed tube adherence test, slime production was observed in 17 of 172 (9.8%) Candida strains. The highest slime production was found among C.parapsilosis isolates (42.8%). It was also shown that non-albicans Candida strains produced signifi cantly higher slime factor compared with C.albicans strains (22.8%; 6.5%; p 0.05). Conclusion: The study demonstrates that Candida sp. strains themselves and their slime productions should be periodically controlled.
